Talk with an Open Heart
Talk about your experience and be open to other perspectives. Like we talked about in Chapter 2, talking about your perspective is the most important way to make change. Be open to other people disagreeing with you, but stick to your perspective if theirs rings false. Talk about your experience of sexual harassment as if talking about it is a gift to your listener. It is.
If you lived in a time where doctors didn’t wash their hands routinely, would you be grateful to someone who talked about the hygienic doctors and the unhygienic ones? Yes. Unless you wanted to die young, you would be grateful. No matter how uncomfortable people get at you talking about your experience, it is still a gift from you to them.
Talking about your experience is not like going to the mall. Sometimes it is like being burned with fire brands or having your skin scraped off. But, it is worth it, and the kindness and love that you give yourself and others in being willing to own your experience is worth the pain. In developing a personalized strategy to defend your career against sexual harassment, it is important to identify the problem behavior, build support, trust your instincts, and talk with an open heart.
